Hosting is part of the product, not a receipt from a registrar

A surprising number of business websites are “hosted” in the sense that a file exists on a server, and unmanaged in every other sense. The domain auto-renews somewhere. The certificate is a mystery. Backups, if they exist, have never been tested.

When the same partner designs, builds and hosts the site, launch includes DNS, HTTPS, redirects, monitoring and a restore path. That is slower than handing over a ZIP file, and dramatically cheaper than an emergency rebuild after a lapsed domain.

Email complicates the picture. Websites and mailboxes do not have to live on the same box, but DNS records must be coordinated. A hosting conversation that ignores MX and SPF is incomplete.

If you cannot name the person who would restore your site on a Tuesday morning, you do not yet have hosting. You have a subscription.
